Seattle Updating Rat Control Requirements

An effort to simplify rat control requirements on demolition permits is underway at the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI). Currently Seattle’s building code requires rat abatement and proof of a contract with a pest control company before the demolition permit is issued. However, it delays some permits and creates problems when permits are issued far in advance of demolition (i.e. rat abatement is completed too early and rats reappear by the time demolition starts).

Starting in March, applicants will file a declaration with the permit affirming they understand rat abatement requirements. At the first ground disturbance inspection, before demolition, the applicant will provide a certification from a pest control company that confirms the date the rat abatement started and that it will continue until demolition starts.
