Seattle’s Snowballing Regulations Threaten to Kill Missing Middle Housing

In Seattle, townhomes often are the best option for first-time buyers looking to purchase starter homes; they are essential for increasing much-needed middle-market supply.

Unfortunately, the combination of Seattle’s Mandatory Housing Affordability (MHA) policies and proliferating city rules, regulations, and new interpretations are making it extremely difficult to build new townhomes or rowhouses. Over the past few months, multiple issues have arisen that, taken together, lengthen construction timelines, radically increase costs, and reduce the feasibility of building new townhomes in the city.

MBAKS Executive Director Kat Sims recently sent a letter to the city council to inform them of these snowballing impacts and to seek assistance in overcoming them.
