SDCI Issues Revised Rule on Yards, Setbacks and Gross Floor Area

Last fall, your association sent a letter to Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) Director Nathan Torgelson, asking him to amend a draft director’s rule that would have changed a long-standing practice of measuring gross floor area from the inside surface of the exterior wall to measuring from the inside face of the stud, which in some cases would have resulted in a loss of dwelling units in a city that desperately needs more housing.

After meeting with association members, staff, and key city staff, this week SDCI issued a

revised draft that appears to address our concerns. Read the draft rule.
