The 100+ mile stretch of I-5 from Tumwater to Marysville is one of the fastest growing regions in the country. Urban and rural communities (and economies) served by this section of I-5 include more than four million residents, or 60% of the state’s population. More than 250,000 vehicles use this section of I-5 every day, yet I-5’s maintenance needs have not kept pace with growth.

The Puget Sound region ranks tenth in the nation for the number of hours spent in traffic. Over the next 20 years, it is estimated that more than $4 billion is needed to maintain I-5 roadways, bridges, and pavement. Recently, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) asked your association to write a letter in support of a Federal BUILD grant for WSDOT and Seattle to help regional stakeholders identify and prioritize critical improvements to both the regional I-5 network and its economic epicenter—Seattle—known as the Partnering for the Future of I-5 project. We said yes. Read the letter.
