Seattle Announces New Demolition Permit Application Process

As of August 8, you must apply for a demolition permit as a standalone permit. Seattle Department of Construction and Inspection (SDCI) will no longer accept combined construction/demolition applications. The new demolition permit process is almost the same as submitting a construction permit via the Seattle Services Portal. Please see How to Submit for Intake for specific instructions.

The changes were made based on feedback from builders. Many MBAKS members were concerned after SDCI implemented the Vacant Building Monitoring Program that they would incur monitoring costs because they couldn’t demolish their vacant building. SDCI is hopeful that the standalone demolition permit will address this concern.
Benefits of the new streamlined demolition process are:

  • Earlier issuance of your demolition permit
  • Better tracking of application materials required for demolition
  • A simplified process for SDCI staff, allowing them to focus on speeding up other parts of the system
