On Monday, July 6, the Seattle City Council voted 7-2 to adopt a new tax, JumpStart Seattle. This tax (CB 119810) is projected to raise more than $200 million per year, earmarked for affordable housing, business assistance, and community development.

Unlike the ill-fated "head tax" repealed two years ago, JumpStart Seattle would target large companies with highly paid employees, instead of focusing on the total number of employees. Annual payrolls greater than $7 million would be taxed on employees making $150k or more per year.
