On Wednesday, June 15, the Bothell Planning Commission held a public hearing on proposed zoning code amendments to add a range of allowed middle housing types to single family zones, including duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, cottage housing, and courtyard housing. MBAKS testified in favor of the amendments, which also include incentives for building middle housing, such as setback allowances and density bonuses. While the amendments are largely positive, MBAKS did raise concerns about a requirement in the proposed code that builders provide an affordable unit for every five market-rate middle housing units and encouraged the Commission to remove this requirement or significantly raise the threshold. The draft amendments may be viewed in the meeting agenda here.
The Commission will continue the public hearing on middle housing at the Wednesday, July 20, Planning Commission meeting.
