The Federal Way City Council recently adopted proposed changes to the city’s open space requirements. MBAKS supported the changes at council following comments at the Federal Way FEDRAC and Planning Commission. The changes reduce open space requirements from 400 sf/unit to 150 sf/unit for single and multifamily development, and exempt development with five units or fewer from the open space requirements. Additionally, they expand the fee-in-lieu payment system to all types of residential development, removing the 15% of gross land area valuation for single family and replacing it with property valuation of the required open space square footage. The ordinance takes effect on September 7.
