Zingerman’s 12 Natural Laws of Business

A Remodelers Webinar Series Event

In 1982, Ari Weinzweig and his partner Paul Saginaw opened a small, 25-seat delicatessen. Today the Zingerman's Community of Businesses includes 10 different businesses with over 500 employees and close to $50 million in annual sales. In this interview hosted by Jennifer VanderBeken, you will hear the approach to business that has led to Zingerman’s success, including the natural laws of business as introduced in Ari’s book, "Zingerman's Guide to Good Leading: Part 1, A Lapsed Anarchist's Approach to Building a Great Business."

Ari will explain why operating in violation of these laws has created an energy crisis in the American workplace and how you can counteract that trend in your own organization. Zingerman’s approach is applicable whether you're running a remodeling company, a law office, a library, a restaurant, a record label, a software firm, or an organic farm, with behind-the-scenes secrets that are invaluable in building a special, sustainable business of any kind.

Ari Weinzweig

Besides being the co-founder of Zingerman’s Delicatessen and a nationally renowned food icon, Ari is actively engaged in day-to-day operations and governance of nearly every business in the Zingerman’s Community and also a prolific writer. Ari regularly travels across the world on behalf of ZingTrain, teaching organizations and businesses about Zingerman’s approach to business. A sought-after keynote speaker, he has delivered keynotes for Inc. 500, Microsoft Expo Spring Conference, Great Game of Business Gathering of Games, Positive Business Conference at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, American Society for Quality, and the American Cheese Society.

One of Zingerman’s guiding principles is being an active part of the community; in 1988, Zingerman’s was instrumental in the founding of Food Gatherers, a food rescue program that delivers over 5 million pounds of food each year to the hungry residents of Washtenaw county. Every year, Zingerman’s donates 10% of its previous year's profits to local community organizations and nonprofits. Over the decades, the Zingerman’s founding partners have been recognized by a variety of organizations. In April 1995, founders Ari and Paul Saginaw were awarded the Jewish Federation of Washtenaw County’s first Humanitarian Award. Ari has also been recognized as one of the “Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America” by the James Beard Foundation and was presented with Lifetime Achievement Awards from Bon Appetit magazine and the American Cheese Society. Ari’s book, "Building a Great Business," was on Inc. magazine’s list of Best Books for Business Leaders.
